About Us

The Water and Wastewater Equipment Manufacturers Association (WWEMA) is a Washington DC-based non-profit trade association representing water and wastewater technology and service providers since 1908. We advocate, inform, and connect our members with key policy and decision-makers and help our members increase their competitiveness and profitability in the U.S. and abroad. Our members supply the most sophisticated leading-edge technologies and services, offering solutions to every water-related environmental problem and need facing today’s society. A member-driven organization, WWEMA is made up of many of the most prominent and influential companies in the industry who are working together to shape the future of water and wastewater technology in the U.S. and around the world.

Our History

WWEMA has been proudly representing water and wastewater technology manufacturers and service providers since 1908. In that year, a group of manufacturers belonging to the American Water Works Association (AWWA) decided to form their own organization for the sole purpose of bringing technologies to water utilities by managing the exhibits at AWWA’s regional and national conferences. They established the Water Works Manufacturers Association. In the 1940s, the name was changed to the Water and Sewage Works Association (WSWA) to reflect our expanded scope of trade show service to the newly formed Federation of Sewerage Works Association – known today as the Water Environment Federation (WEF). In the 1960s, the members of WSWA raised $1 million for a public education campaign to educate the general public about the value of water as a life-giving “product” to be safeguarded and preserved. With that change in perception of water as a critical resource came our final name change to the Water and Wastewater Equipment Manufacturers Association (WWEMA). Strategic Plan 2021-2023

WWEMA’s Strategic Planning Committee meets annually to review the Association’s Strategic Plan and to make necessary adjustments based on changes in the industry and the priorities of the Association. To ensure a longer-term planning and implementation horizon, the Association develops a three-year Strategic Plan. The current plan covers 2021-2023 and focuses on four key areas – Advocate and Influence, Inform and Educate, Connect and Create Opportunity, and Assure Organizational Sustainability. A strategic plan map highlights these key areas.

Collaboration

One of WWEMA’s key roles is to connect the needs, concerns, and goals of its members to those of the larger water community. To do so, WWEMA Headquarters’ staff and WWEMA members sit on a number of committees within the American Water Works Association, the Water Environment Federation, and the WateReuse Association and liaison with all the major national state and municipal water and wastewater organizations. Additionally, WWEMA staff and its members sit on various innovative technology committees, related industry advisory committees and boards, and the U.S. Department of Commerce Environmental Technologies Trade Advisory Committee. Through information sharing, joint meetings, and co-signed letters of support, among other efforts WWEMA is able to greatly expand its reach and collectively support issues of critical importance to its members as well the larger water industry.
